About TrickerBattle.com

TrickerBattle started out as an idea to solve the confusion and whatnot with online battles which were being created and managed through forum threads on TrickSession and Club540. Battles were disorganized and became chaotic when more than a handful of trickers wanted to join. The rules were also sporadic: Ex: Provide a 30 second clip featuring a kick, a flip, a twist, and a combo. How is that supposed to help trickers improve if they don't win?

The Concept:

This website offers a solution to that madness. While trickers CAN host win/loss battles in exactly the same style mentioned above, we encourage users to get more technical and organized with their battles by providing various scoring methods, judging methods, opponent/roster setups, and more. For example, say a tricker loses a battle which has opted for Technique Breakdown Scoring as its scoring system. That tricker can clearly see how judges scored him/her and see where he/she needs to improve. Maybe his or her kicks are not being chambered well enough and points are being lost there. Maybe his/her twists are off-axis. Our judging system allows for such analyzation to help all trickers improve and learn what their strong and weak points are.

Facebook Integration:

TrickerBattle.com is integrated with Facebook's API as a tricking app to provide users with a rich and interactive experience. For example, as you may notice, there is no manual registration here at TrickerBattle. Simply click the Login with Facebook button on the top right of the screen and accept the permissions request. We will automatically sync your Facebook account with our database and register you on the fly. The only information we store is your Facebook uid, your name, and the url to your profile picture. That's it! We don't store your email address because the reality is not only do we not need it, we don't want it! We hate how many sites out there have our personal emails, and we want to be one of the few who don't add to the problem. That being said, the only way we can contact you is through your Facebook wall. Another example of how we utilize Facebook integration is when another user challenges you to a battle on TrickerBattle.com, you will (by default) receive a notice on your Facebook wall. This is one of a few cases where our site notifies you of some event or update on your wall. Before you freak out, let us be perfectly clear about something. We HATE Farmville and Mafia Wars and all those fucking annoying apps which spam your wall and your friends walls and make sifting through status updates a total pain in the ass. This is why we have gone above and beyond and implemented a yes/no switch for all automated Facebook wall notifications. You can turn off the ones you don't want and leave on the ones you need. It takes about 5 seconds.

Nerd stuff:

TrickerBattle.com was coded in PHP5 on a custom framework. jQuery dominates the client-side and the AJAX calls. The site is optimized for a browser other than Internet Explorer. Everything works in IE except that it ignores our rounded corners.

About the Developer

My name is Matt and I am a tricker and a coder - 'nuff said. This site is for you to use and enjoy, not for me to gloat or sit up on some throne.

Moderators

Our moderators are still being screened out and trained in, and many of the moderation functions are still being coded during beta phase. If you think you have what it takes to be a moderator here and have a lot of free time to help out other people here on TrickerBattle.com, then email me at breezephp@aim.com or PM me on Facebook and I will see what I can do.

Credits

I couldn't have made this site without the help of the following people:

  • Dave Cheatwood & Eric Benjamin at TrickSession: These guys put up with a ton of my bullshit and let me sticky a thread about this site on their forum. Huge props.
  • John McGahan (Munks) & John Hamel (Dlsso): My 2 most dedicated alpha testers. They helped me debug more shit than I can comprehend. It must have been the most frustrating, unsatisfying and boring experience for them, but they never complained once. A couple of stand-up guys.
  • The rest of my alpha testers: These guys helped out as well with testing a few things: Jay Grenier, Robin Gordijn (Illusionist), Jeremy Epstein, Marco Nicolescu, Vasilis Paraskevopoulos (Bilakispa), Azrael Harris, David Pardoe, Christian Hubbard (Mummra), and James Daly.
  • Sean Cannon at Club540: Sean offered some of his code library to me, some of his server space, and let TrickerBattle.com pull data from the Club540 database for the tricktionary.

Coming Soon

There are a few things that we just couldn't finish before Beta launch. They will be implemented when the time is right:

  • Profiles: This is first on my list - user profiles will be finished soon.
  • Tournaments: Coding tournaments is a major task which requires a very active and flourished user base. The good news is, the plans are all laid out and all that remains is the actual coding and implementation (the easy part). The first couple tournaments will be sponsored by either TrickerBattle.com, another website, or 3rd party martial arts organization. This will let us iron out all the kinks early and in a controlled environment instead of letting users create their own tournaments and have a flood of tournaments that don't work.
  • Monetary Credits: Monetary credits will be available for purchase, most likely via Paypal, when we have enough users to justify both the time invested implementing and managing the system and also to cover the Paypal merchant fees. They will likely be available for $1 USD per MC (Monetary Credit). MC's will allow you to create battles with MC entry fees to create pots worth real money. Winners of these battles will be able to sell the MC's back to TrickerBattle (basically, cash-out) for real money. This is NOT gambling, but rather similar to an actual martial arts tournament. At NASKA tournaments, you pay a registration fee and you have a chance to win prizes with cash value. Same thing. That being said, we will be requiring you to have a valid PayPal account and since we are unsure about local laws and such for all our users, we are saying you have to be 18 years old to use this feature. We will not be enforcing this age programatically, but rather will trust that you are at least 18 if you have a PayPal account. In any regard, we will not be held liable if you break any local laws to use this feature.
  • TrickSession and Club540 Integration: Both of these websites have forums and/or threads dedicated to battles and have both displayed an interest in integrating our sites. We will likely be coding some functionality to auto-post to these forums or providing an RSS feed which can easily be implemented by either site to keep you updated as to what is going on here (who is winning, etc.) without having to check TrickerBattle.com or Facebook.com.
  • Badges: I have the graphics ready for badges, I just need to fine-tune and assign them for each benchmark. Battle points, wins, judge points, etc will all have different ranks based on points accumulated and badges will be assigned to these ranks for easy visual reference.

Known Bugs

We are aware of these and are still trying to track down the causes so we can fix these for you asap:

Some YouTube videos don't work

For some reason, sometimes a video from YouTube just will not embed. It returns an error on the back-end but the error is vague and does not tell us WHY it will not embed. It happened with two videos during testing, and one of the videos had opted to not allow embedding (so that one was obvious). The other allowed embedding but would not embed (through our oEmbed api). With all of our videos after beta launch being home videos of tricks, I don't foresee any issues, but just be aware and PLEASE let us know when you run into this bug.

TrickerBattle looks like shit in IE6/7

Go figure. We will eventually fix the styling bugs for these browsers but they are a low priority. In the meantime use a real browser.
